Guitar Class
Fall 2009

Whether you aspire to be a classical guitarist or the next rock superstar, Wolf Trap’s guitar classes will give you a great start!

Our instructors will cover the fundamentals: keys, chords, scales, strum patterns, and finger picking, as well as the history of the instrument, notation, and traditional musical styles. Concepts learned in class will be applied to songs and appropriate chord progressions.

Twelve lessons will be held during the Fall term for both Level 1 and Level 2 on Mondays from September 21 through December 7, 2009.
Classes are not interchangeable.
Participants can only attend their registered class.
Space is very limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

Tuition: $300 per 12-week session

Teacher bio

Over the past 30 years, Glen McCarthy has been instrumental in developing guitar curriculum throughout Fairfax County. He has taught Guitar Methods, a required course for all Music Education majors at George Mason University, for over 15 years. At Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, he has extensively developed the guitar program, which is now an integral part of the music curriculum. “Mr. Mac,” as he is known to his students, was nominated for the 2003-2004 Fairfax County Teacher of the Year, received the 2005 Wolf Trap Scholarship for Performing Arts Teachers, adjudicated the 2008 Guitar Solo and Ensemble Festival in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and was guest clinician in the 2007 and 2008 Guitar Foundation of American conventions and the Virginia Tech, Roanoke County, Loudoun County, Virginia, Texas, and National Music Educators Conferences. Many of his students have gone on to enjoy successful music careers. Mr. Mac continues to play in big band, bluegrass, Celtic, country, funk, German, Hawaiian, jazz, musicals, praise bands, rock, and numerous wedding groups and ensembles.
